When does neck pain start after a car accident?
Often not at the scene. Mayo Clinic's whiplash page says symptoms most often start within days of the injury (Mayo Clinic). So feeling fine at the crash and sore two days later is a pattern the medical sources describe.
Mayo Clinic lists these as symptoms of whiplash that may appear:
- neck pain and stiffness, and pain that gets worse when you move your neck;
- less range of motion in the neck;
- headaches, most often starting at the base of the skull;
- pain or tenderness in the shoulder, upper back or arms;
- tingling or numbness in the arms;
- tiredness and dizziness.
Head injuries can also show up late. MedlinePlus says symptoms of a head injury can appear right away or develop slowly over several hours or days (MedlinePlus, head injury).
Mayo Clinic also says a whiplash injury may not cause symptoms right away. It lists how long after the event the symptoms started among the questions a clinician may ask (Mayo Clinic, whiplash diagnosis). Only a clinician who examines you can say what is causing your pain. This page does not try to.
When to get care, and when to call 911
If this is an emergency, call 911. MedlinePlus lists reasons to contact a provider about neck pain (MedlinePlus, neck pain).
One entry in that list covers a fall, blow or injury: if you cannot move your arm or hand, have someone call 911. The same list includes:
- neck pain that was caused by a fall, blow or injury;
- numbness, tingling or weakness in your arm or hand;
- trouble swallowing or breathing along with the neck pain;
- loss of control over urination or bowel movements;
- trouble walking and balancing;
- symptoms that do not go away in 1 week with self-care.
For a head injury, MedlinePlus lists signs that call for medical help right away. They include becoming very sleepy, behaving abnormally, a seizure, vomiting more than once, or losing consciousness, even briefly (MedlinePlus, head injury).
Should you see a doctor after a minor crash?
Mayo Clinic says to see a healthcare professional if you have neck pain or other whiplash symptoms after a car accident. It says a quick diagnosis rules out broken bones or other damage that can cause or worsen symptoms (Mayo Clinic).
Mayo Clinic's advice names car accidents in general, with no exception for a slow one. It also says to see a healthcare professional as soon as possible if neck pain and other symptoms follow an injury. When you go, it says to be ready to describe the event in detail (Mayo Clinic).
